Child Injured While Playing Near Highway Drain — Malaysia Urges Harmony Through Safety Awareness

Although the shocking incident occurred in Portugal, news of a child being struck by a speeding vehicle while playing near a highway drain has rapidly circulated across Malaysian social media, prompting serious concerns over child safety and public infrastructure in the country.

Reports stated that a group of children were seen playing in a large roadside drain near a busy Portuguese highway. Without warning, a speeding car lost control and crashed into one of the children, sending him flying through the air — a scene likened to a superhero moment. Thankfully, the child was rushed to the hospital and, though seriously injured, survived.

Harmony Starts With Protecting Our Children

In response, Malaysia’s Road Safety Department released a statement emphasizing that, although the incident happened abroad, the risks highlighted are very relevant to local conditions. Similar scenarios are present in semi-urban Malaysian areas, where children often play near roads or drainage areas with minimal supervision and insufficient safety measures.

"Children are innocent and often unaware of danger. It’s our duty to ensure they grow up in a safe environment," said a spokesperson from the Malaysian Child Welfare Association.

Experts have pointed out that many areas in Malaysia, especially near highways, lack basic protective infrastructure such as fences or warning signs. It is urged that the government take proactive steps in reinforcing safety around schools, residential neighborhoods, and main roads with child-proof barriers and clear signage.

At the same time, parents are reminded of their critical role in monitoring their children during outdoor activities. Communities are also encouraged to participate in creating a safer environment through neighborhood patrols and educational initiatives.

"A harmonious society isn’t just about racial unity — it’s also about ensuring our next generation is safe and cared for," shared a concerned parent from Selangor.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder: child safety is not a small matter. True harmony in Malaysia begins with collective responsibility to protect the lives of our children.
