In a somber incident that has shaken the Penang police force, a senior officer tragically lost his life yesterday evening in what appears to be a case of suicide. The victim, 58-year-old Sergeant Francis A/L Aruputham, was serving as a supervisor at the Commandant Camp of the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) at the time of the incident.
Heartbreaking End for Honorable Officer
According to internal reports, Francis had completed his regular shift from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on April 8 but did not leave the premises afterward. Instead, he remained seated alone in the office chair of the camp's administrative area. At approximately 6:12 PM, a single gunshot was heard — a moment that would forever alter the day for those present.
Eyewitness accounts from three fellow officers on site revealed that they rushed to investigate the source of the sound, only to find Francis critically injured. He had used his service weapon, a P99 pistol (serial number RMP-Z12257), to shoot himself in the head. The bullet reportedly passed through a glass partition before striking him.
Emergency services were called immediately, with an ambulance arriving at 6:35 PM. Francis was swiftly transported to Penang General Hospital for emergency treatment. Shortly after, a forensics investigation team arrived at 6:45 PM to examine the scene. A 9mm bullet casing (SME 9mm 9-19) was found on the office floor alongside the firearm.
Focus on Mental Health in the Force
Preliminary investigations have confirmed that only one shot was fired. No signs of foul play were discovered. According to colleagues, Francis had recently exhibited signs of depression. However, his professional record remained impeccable, with no disciplinary actions noted throughout his distinguished 36-year career in the police force.
The Penang state police department has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured a thorough investigation. They also emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and support among law enforcement personnel.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a dedicated officer. His service will not be forgotten. We are also reviewing our internal protocols to provide better mental health support for our officers,” said a senior official from IPK Penang.
The case is being treated with sensitivity and respect for the family and colleagues affected. Authorities urge the public and media to refrain from speculation and await official updates as investigations continue.
